10 Minutes with…
Kathy Sledge who will be performing as part of the Nocturne series of concerts at Blenheim Palace in June
Are you able to name some highlights from your time with Sister Sledge?
My best highlights are my early days with my sisters. Performing with so many iconic artists from Sting to Luther, Aretha, Smokey, Lionel. Touring with the Jackson brothers and being paralleled as “ the female girl band” and paralleled to Michael as the lead singer. That was huge to me. Also our song recently being added to the Library Of Congress is huge. Greatest highlight ever.
Which artists / music had the greatest impact on you when growing up?
Stevie Wonder. Aretha Franklin. Gladys Knight. Sting. ..too many to name.
How do you feel about “We Are Family” turning 40 this year? Did you realise the impact and success it would have when recording it?
It’s amazing what “we are family“ means to me. It is the song that has honestly outlived so many eras. For instance, when you mention “we are family”… You don’t have to say “do you remember?” You just know it as a mainstay. It has become a household name/ brand. And for that… It doesn’t get any better.
When I recorded it I was 16 years old and I could have never imagined the impact that it still has today. Huge.
Being such an iconic figure in disco, what do you think about its revival in contemporary times?
Honestly I believe “disco” is “dance” and “good music is good music” so I’m not surprised it is being embraced by generations to come. It’s “feelgood music” and I love the fact that it just keeps evolving.. and evolving…
