Theatre in the Dock
Tooley’s historic boatyard October 5th-9th 2013
Theatre in the Dock is becoming an annual event in Banbury. A week when the historic dock hiding away behind Castle Quay shopping centre stops working on boats and turns into a theatre. Canal based performer, Kate Saffin, who has been organising it together with the director of Tooley’s Matt Armitage for several years now is keen to involve local performers and this year will see some of the young performing arts students at Banbury College taking to the stage during Canal Day. And they are going to get a chance to find out more about creating theatre in odd spaces with a workshop in the dock – watch out for them on Canal Day and next year!
On Canal Day just drop in – there will be short performances all day so a chance for visitors to take the weight off their feet and soak up some of the atmosphere of the dock and be entertained. Tooley’s staff will be on hand to answer any questions about the history of the dock as well.
On Saturday evening there’s a cabaret and buffet for the boater’s (and any others who will be helping at Canal Day) – lots of music, stories, laughter and food. All for £8.
And to round it all off Tuesday and Wednesday will see Kate on stage with her acclaimed one woman adaptation of Ramlin Rose: the boatwoman’s story by local author Sheila Stewart. Based on the lives of the last generation of women to spend their lives on the working boats around Banbury, Rose’s story is one that will have you laughing and crying!
'Kate Saffin is utterly convincing in the role of Rose … everything is dramatised through Rose's reminiscences, a task that would daunt a lesser actress but a challenge to which Saffin is more than equal, merely making good use of the props box and using every inch of the snug stage that is available to her.' (Scotsman Aug 2005)
