Get ready for another dollop of outdoor, muddy fun as The Little Welly – the UK’s largest obstacle course for children – returns to Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire on 8th and 9th June, with some extra exciting news and some special celebrity guests!
Parenting author and broadcaster and local Henley resident Marina Fogle will officially open this year’s event with her two children Ludo (aged nine) and Iona (aged seven) having created such wonderful memories participating as a family in both 2017 and 2018.
Marina Fogle says, “The Little Welly is one of our favourite family days in the calendar – we all absolutely love it. Ben and I feel passionately about the importance of embracing family fun-time in the fresh air and we all had the time of our lives last year taking on the many muddy challenges.”
The grand opening takes place at 9.30am on the 8th June with an official cutting of the ribbon. “The children are so excited, they are already counting down the sleeps until the 8thJune, I can’t think of a better day out for all the family to enjoy and it’s right here on our doorstep.” continues Marina.
The Little Welly is also delighted to announce its brand new partnership with Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. The charity was chosen for all the wonderful work it carries out supporting over 21,000 seriously ill children and their families in the UK through Roald Dahl Nurses, as well as the local link to the Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden. Participants are being invited to help The Little Welly raise vital funds for the charity by collecting sponsorship for completing the 3km course and conquering the 30 big obstacles – the forms can be accessed here.
Whilst this is a national partnership, Henley-On-Thames is the only UK venue that will have the honour of welcoming Marvin the Marvellous Crocodile – the charity’s official mascot – to the event, who will be greeting locals into a Roald Dahl themed activity tent for fun, games and story times. Visitors on Sunday the 9th will also be lucky enough to meet one of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity nurses, who will be telling stories from her Marvin the Crocodile branded vintage Citroen 2CV, called Florence.
Marina Fogle will also be working with The Little Welly to drive awareness of this new charitable link by featuring in its new promotional video. The video also features local school children from St. Mary’s School, Henley on Thames and their families and of course Marvin the Marvellous Crocodile.
Tracey Beard from The Little Welly, who lives and works in Henley on Thames says, “This year is going to be bigger and better than ever. We had such fantastic feedback from locals last year and we’re really pulling out all the stops this year to ensure 2019 is our best event to date.
We’re delighted to have Marina Fogle and her family attend once again and of course we’re so excited to welcome Marvin the Marvellous Crocodile. We hope our new partnership with Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity goes a long way to support its Specialist Children’s Nurses and Healthcare Professionals who do such amazing work in the community.”
It’s Kids vs Mud time!
Especially created for kids aged four to 12, The Little Welly obstacle course has more than 30 challenges over a 3km route. It includes climbing walls, a huge water slide, scramble nets, balancing poles, foam pit and of course, lots of mud! This unique, interactive experience provides an exciting, energetic adventure in the great outdoors and promises to create family memories to last a lifetime.
The muddier the better … The Little Welly offers the perfect antidote to sedentary screen time this summer.
Designed for children to enjoy with family and friends, this unique festival lets you share the magic of the great outdoors with your kids and enjoy new activities and experiences through fitness, foam and fun!
This is the sixth year The Little Welly has landed in Henley. Having already been enjoyed by thousands of children in Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Surrey over the last three years, it is fast becoming as popular as Christmas as these previous Little Welly competitors can testify:
“The Little Welly is my best day of the year, after Christmas Day!” – William, 7 (Henley on Thames)
“I wish we could do Little Welly races every weekend!” – Jake, 8 (Henley on Thames)
The obstacle course is reimagined every year and is especially created to challenge kids (and their parents!) in a fun, unique and safe outdoor environment. Scale the towering heights of The Web Frame, conquer the looming Dark Crawl, splash through the Mud & Water Pits, brave the Spider Tunnel, fearlessly face the Three Hump Dragon, balance on the Long Pole Run and slide around in the Foam Pit. And as a reward for all that effort every child can collect their The Little Welly medal as they cross the finishing line – Great memories are made here!
But there’s so much more to enjoy – Set in the heart of Greenlands on the outskirts of beautiful Henley on Thames, the Little Welly Festival Village has something for all the family including The Toddler Course, Climbing Wall, Pony Rides, Bungee Trampolines and Total Wipeout Sweeper. The Big Stage will play host to live music and entertainment throughout the day and the Activities Tent will have a full schedule of free workshops and ‘have a go’ sessions. An array of culinary delights are also available to help satisfy even the biggest appetites including pizzas, artisan coffee, prosecco & pancakes, burgers and vegetarian alternatives, waffles and ice creams.
A day at The Little Welly is jam-packed full of fun, adventure and future memories – but don’t just take our word for it:
“The Little Welly is such a great day out for all the family – my boys loved it; fun, fitness, foam and lots and lots of mud!” – Roger Black, Olympic Medallist
“My mummy ran all the way round the course with me and helped me when I got stuck under the net. I wasn’t scared at all. I was so happy. She laughed lots too. I want to do it again next year.” – Isabelle, 5
“Normally, my mum gets cross with me when I get that muddy! It was so much fun and I loved doing the race with my friends too. Better than sports day by far!” – Amelie, 7
“I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Usually with kids based activities, parents hang around watching their children enjoy themselves. It’s a pretty passive affair. The Little Welly was all about enjoying the experience together and it was lovely to share something with Freya and be ‘in the moment’ with her. I think her favourite bit was watching me get soaked and covered in foam at the end!” – Neil Canning, dad of Freya, 5
