Rare ceramics sell at Holloways in Banbury

E-mail
miniatures_apr_11Rare items sold for thousands of pounds more than expected, despite being damaged, at the first-ever specialist European Ceramics and Glass sale at Holloway’s Auctioneers in Banbury.
The high hammer prices achieved for the scarce objects shows that rarity can overcome condition problems, according to Nick Williams at the Parsons Street auction rooms.
An early 18th century Dutch Delft wall-mounted cistern was estimated to sell for £500 to £800, but on the day went under the hammer for £3,200 despite being badly chipped and cracked.
A collection of 18 Meissen dessert plates – some quite badly damaged – also sold well, making £4,000 against an estimate of £300 to £500.
Even “toy” ceramics achieved top prices, with a collection of 18th century miniature pieces, probably from the Lowestoft factory, selling for £2,000, again despite the damage reflected in their £100 to £150 estimate.
“People shouldn’t assume that because something is damaged it is not worth anything, as these examples prove. Holloway’s staff are happy to look at any objects you may want to sell and these can be brought to the sale room on a Thursday without an appointment for a free appraisal,” says Mr Williams.
Items are now being accepted for the next Antiques and Fine Art sale on May 24th and a second European Ceramics and Glass sale in September.
